Protocol (Communications, Industrial Networks)

In the world of PLCs and communications, protocols formally define how communication takes place. There are many different ways devices may need to communicate and therefore many different protocols have been developed.  Protocols define the rules devices must follow to establish and maintain communication. They describe such things as the physical media used to connect equipment (copper, fiber, wireless), electrical signaling, format of the data, and rules to determine what device talks when.

Common Industrial Protocols:

  • Modbus
  • ProfiBus
  • ProfiNet
  • DeviceNet
